TAKING ACTION IN THE BLACKOUT

03 Jun 2020

The murder of 46-year-old American citizen George Floyd by Minneapolis police has sparked immense civil unrest in the US. This tragic event has acted as the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the discriminatory treatment of black people not just in America, but across the world. Protests are taking place across both America and the UK in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. Many are posting to social media to show their support, but in situations like these a few words and an image posted to the timeline are not enough. Take action by educating yourself and then others on what the black community have gone through both in the past and present, supporting anti-racism organisations through fundraising, volunteering and donations. We have listed some UK organisations below…

Show Racism The Red Card

‘Show Racism The Red Card is an anti-racism educational charity. We aim to combat racism through enabling role models, who are predominately but not exclusively footballers, to present an anti-racist message to young people and others.’

Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust

‘We work with young people from disadvantaged backgrounds aged 13 to 30 to inspire and enable them to succeed in the career of their choice. We also influence others to create a fairer society in which everyone, regardless of their background, can flourish.’

Black Thrive

‘Black Thrive is a partnership between communities, statutory organisations, voluntary and private sector. They work together to reduce the inequality and injustices experienced by Black people in mental health services.’

Runneymede

Runnymede is the UK’s leading independent race equality think tank. We generate intelligence to challenge race inequality in Britain through research, network building, leading debate, and policy engagement. –

If you are able to donate, please do so. We will soon be posting a list of media recommendations, such as books and podcasts, that we believe will help educate further on the topic. Important changes will never just happen, we must fight for them together.
